Cantieri Cultural Association
Cantieri started and is developing thanks to the absolute clarity of its intentions: a thorough task (slow but ceaseless) right across the Province, to create a heterogeneous public and recognise High Quality Original Dance and Urban Dance as Art with enormous capacities for communication and directness.
The aim of the Cantieri’s active presence is to promote dance by mobilising all the assistance it needs by every means possible (even the most unorthodox) to bring it closer to a new public, periodically monitoring its development.
For the planning alone of a similar scheme, in an area such as ours where dance is virtually unknown, it was, right from the start (1994), vital to dedicate all our attention to Promotion Activities that would slowly but surely alter the cultural history of dance in our area.
Furthermore, the presence of choreographer Monica Francia as artistic director of the Cantieri Cultural Association and the constant work carried out by our members and collaborators created a fruitful terrain for the appreciation of an original type of dance. It inspired in the young the need to create and set up working groups and laid the foundations that would make it possible to watch and appreciate top level original and experimental dance, without the preconceived ideas that normally restrict the way dance is viewed in Italy.
We brought innovative works of international scope to Ravenna and Alfonsine, by hosting original Festivals with precise aims supported by the enormous patience and passion that characterise the poetics of this Association.
Our strategy has been rewarded by the Municipal, Provincial and Regional bodies who support for three-yearly agreements the Lavori in Pelle Festival, showcase of the original youth dance at Alfonsine and Ammutinamenti (Mutiny) Festival of Urban Dance in Ravenna.

Cantieri Cultural Association in agreement with the Municipality of Ravenna- Department for Youth Policies – for a city project involving Contemporary Culture and Dance,
with the contribution of the Province of Ravenna, and the Emilia Romagna Region, and the collaboration of the port enterprises: Compagnia Portua and the Ravenna Port Authority
The idea of an urban dance Festival sprung from a consideration of the fact that the people of Ravenna find it difficult to establish a fruitful relationship with contemporary dance. The intention is to propose to a non-specialist public a series of urban performances in public thoroughfares, places of work, waiting areas, meeting places for the young, not only in the centre of the town but also in the outlying zones. This will include streets and squares, and even supermarkets and post offices. The public we are seeking, besides the enthusiasts who will follow us, is the one we will find there by chance and who will stop to watch the shows. We personally believe strongly that experimenting with new spaces and new ways of interesting the public is at present the only way to save the ancient art of dance. Our aim is to divest it of worn-out and useless rituals, to bring it successfully into contact with the innocent bystanders by arousing their curiosity and involving them in a rapport which starts with physical attraction and then turns to love. We mean to start a new relationship between dance and the city, top level original dance, which almost crosses the boundaries of the performance, a type of dance people are little used to seeing, for free; a type of dance that invites recognition and appreciation, that is willing to become a streetwalker that’s what it takes to survive . The bodies in the streets, on the concrete, in the offices, shop windows, work areas at the port, in the station rooms, leaping across the typical ritual barriers of the theatre, last just long enough to be seen, just long enough to test out the limits of this ancient language and reveal its contemporaneity with the heightened effects of proximity and full sunlight.
